The Importance of Strength Training for Bone Density
Ultimately, the reason we work out is to have physical freedom: to be able to decide and choose what to do and what not to do. Maybe that means being able to hike long distances, play a certain sport, or find an attractive mate. Either way, training can give you options that were previously unattainable. As we get older, though, physical freedom’s meaning narrows down to being able to live free of assistance.
One of the biggest issues the elderly have to deal with is the probability of accidents. The reason why accidents become so dangerous is that the elderly are prone to breaking bones with minor falls. Due to many factors, their bodies have become frail and any impact can mean a disability for the rest of their life.
The problem is that to experience life to the fullest we MUST take action: we must be actively moving through space, interacting with others and the environment.
How Strength Training Increases Bone Density
Strength training stimulates bone-forming cells called osteoblasts, which helps in increasing bone mass. Weight-bearing exercises apply stress to the bones, prompting them to grow stronger and denser.
Benefits of Increased Bone Density
Reduced Risk of Fractures: Stronger bones are less likely to break.
Improved Balance and Coordination: Strength training also enhances muscle strength, which can help prevent falls.
Enhanced Quality of Life: Maintaining bone density can help individuals stay active and independent longer.
Strength training improves our ability to confidently be independent in many ways. And while increased bone density isn’t one that we consciously feel and appreciate, it is one of the most important adaptations. Accidents are bound to happen, it’s up to us to do everything we can to minimize its impact on our lives.
